A Peeping Tom Tool For Webmasters
You might remember hearing about Winning the Web’s contest wherein one of the top prizes was a paid review on John Chow dot Com. Well, the winner of that review is Ron from dotdriven.com and he’s decided to cash in his review by promoting ClickTale, an online service that records every action of your site’s visitors.
More Than Just Metrics
There are a lot of stats for bloggers and webmasters to keep track of. We want to know where website traffic is coming from, what keywords are driving them our way, how many unique visitors we’re getting, and so forth. All of these numbers are important, of course, but they fail to measure exactly what your site’s visitors are doing while surfing your blog or website. Yes, you can track page views, but you fail to observe their actual surfing patterns.
That’s where ClickTale comes into play. The main service that they offer is the ability to create “movies of visitors’ every mouse movement, every click and every scrolling action.” In a nutshell, you’re shown a video of what a single visitor did while they were on your site, from scrolling down the page to clicking on your affiliate links. It’s actually pretty neat and gives you an “inside look”, as it were, into the minds of your visitors. They are real people, after all, and not just numbers on a graph.
Generating and Implementing the Script
When you start a new project in ClickTale, you will be presented with a simple form to fill. Although it may look like you have more options available to you, the only variable is the percentage of website visitors you would like to record. If you have a relatively low level of traffic, you can probably get away with 100% recording, but if you’ve got John Chow dot Com kind of traffic, you might want to dial it down.
You might be wondering why you wouldn’t want to record 100% of your traffic anyways. Well, that’s because not all of ClickTale’s services are free. There are four pricing plans and only one of which won’t cost you a penny. The free plan gives you 100 recordings each week and a maximum of two domains. The personal, standard, and professional plans are $19, $49, and $99 a month, respectively.
After setting up your project, there is a screen where you can pick up the Javascript for implementation onto your website. There are two parts to this script: the first goes right after the opening tag (if you’re using Wordpress, this should be in your header.php file), and the second goes just before the closing tag (should be in footer.php). The first recording should come in within a few minutes of implementing the code.
Voyeurism: Dot Com Mogul Style
I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m invading on the privacy of my visitors when I watch the videos of their surfing habits, especially since they don’t know that I’m doing it. Even so, the ClickTale movie tool is very useful, because it lets you see what a real visitor is doing on your site. I set up the code for my fighting games blog and learned that visitors typically don’t scroll all the way to the bottom of a page. I guess that makes sense.
There are a handful of options and tidbits of information for you to enjoy about each and every visitor that’s recorded. For starters, you see what country they’re in, how long they stayed, where they came from, what page they arrived at first, and exactly where they clicked on your site (it records left, right, and center mouse button clicks). You can watch the video in real-time or accelerate it up to 10x.
Beyond the Videos
The above-described videos are the main product offered by ClickTale, but there are also ClickTale Heatmaps (included with your account) that show you how much time people spend on each portion of your site. As you collect more data from more visitors, this information becomes a little more accurate and more reliable. Using these two tools in tandem, I can definitely see some value in ClickTale. There’s no harm in giving the free account a whirl. Heck, there’s even an affiliate program!

Profile of Success - Neil Patel
I first met Neil Patel at Blog World. Before then, I only know Neil through his Pronet Advertising blog. However, Neil is more than just a successful blogger. He is a very successful businessman. Neil is the CTO of Advantage Consulting Services, a company that he co-founded in 2003. ACS works with 22 of the other Top 100 Technorati blogs and made $2.5 million last year. Neil is also the co-founder of Crazy Egg, one of the best visual visitor tracking tools on the Net. And here is the kicker. Neil is only 21 years old and still going to school.
You would think with running a Technorati Top 100 blog and two companies and going to school, Neil would have no time for personal blogging. Well, you would be wrong. Quick Sprout is Neil’s personal blog about branding yourself for success. Branding is something every blogger should work on. If you were to ask me what separate me from the 100+ million bloggers out there, I would have to say, I have a brand. Neil calls it the rock star formula.

Neil is one of only two people I know who owns a Black American Express card. However, unlike my friend Tyler Dikman, Neil got his card for free. How did he do that?
I am currently on the Board of Advisors of a handful of companies. One of them being Affiliate Programs (who is mainly known for owning a lot of the media properties in the online gambling space). Because I am on the board of advisors for that company, one of the perks that they provided me was a Centurion card. The best part about getting the card through them, is that they paid for the upfront fees to obtain the card and they pay the monthly card bill.
That’s a pretty damn good perk! The fee for getting a Black Amex is $7,500 and you have to charge a minimum of $250,000 a year to get one. And Neil doesn’t have to pay the monthly card bill? His advise must be worth a lot of money to Affiliate Programs.
If Affiliate Programs is willing to give that kind of perk for Neil’s advice, then he is definitely someone you want to keep an eye on and learn from. I’ve added the Quick Sprout RSS feed to my Google reader and I advise you to do the same if you want to achieve rock star status.

Making Money 24/7
The holiday season always reminds me why I make my money online. When I used to run a print shop, we would shut down the day before Christmas and wouldn’t open again until Jan 2nd of next year. Many businesses shut down for a few days or even a week during the holiday season. While it’s nice to take a little break, it’s also a bad use of resources - you have all those assets sitting there doing nothing.
The Net is a completely different story. My sites make money no matter what time of the year it is. That was driven home to me during Christmas dinner at my parents house. I went to check some stats and found I was up by a few thousand dollars. On a day when nearly all traditional businesses are closed, I made money. And I made it while enjoying Christmas dinner with the family. It’s pretty hard to find a deal as good as this.
Passive Income Vs Active Income
Active income is money made for your time input. The best example of active income is a job - you do your work, you get paid and when you’re not working, you don’t get paid. Passive Income is money made whether you’re there or not. Best example of passive income would be income from investments. Given a choice, most people would prefer to make passive income over active income. Why spend your time making money when you can spend it on much more important things?
While some get rich quick gurus have promoted it as such, blogging isn’t 100% passive income. From an Internet marketing stand point, it’s one the less passive income sources available because it requires a substantial and on going time commitment.
